Wil Kilroy

Master Teacher

Kilroy HeadWil Kilroy is Department Chair and Professor of Theatre at the University of Southern Maine, Director of the Michael Chekhov Theatre Institute for actors and teachers, since 1994, and the USM Theatre Academy for 13 - 18 year olds, and Vice President of the National Michael Chekhov Association.
Wil and his partner Lisa Dalton began teaching Michael Chekhov acting classes with Mala Powers in 1993 and they formed the National Michael Chekhov Association in 1994. For 13 years, they taught the annual Chekhov Theatre Intensive program each year at University of Southern Maine and made that training program part of the USM curriculum. When Mala Powers died in 2007, they carried on the training program. When Lisa Dalton moved to Texas in 2009, the training program was brought to Texas, where it's been presented every year. Lisa and Wil have now taught the very popular Theatre Intensive for 18 consecutive years and have expanded it to twice per year, Winter or Spring and Summer.
As an actor, Wil appeared on TV as Jim for Norway Savings Bank, and as David in Purple Breasts, on a state tour raising money for breast cancer research. 
As a director, Wil's productions of The Laramie Project, A Midsummer Night's Dream, Everything Sprite, and Purple Breasts were chosen for competition in Kennedy Center's New England festivals. He recently assisted Broadway director Glenn Casale on a production of Into the Woods.
Wil's screenplay, Nana's Slippers, was 2006 finalist in two film festival competitions.
Wil was a recipient of Kennedy Center Bronze Medallion and a faculty scholarship to study with Uta Hagen. He received the Moss Hart Award, the Maine Education Association's Human and Civil Rights Award, and USM's Outstanding Teacher / Scholar Award.
